How Do I Follow Jesus?

How do I become a follower of Jesus?

What many have called the plan of salvation is more simply defined as the way in which God requires an individual to have peace with Him.

Someone who follows Jesus is one who comes to peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ by the action of being born again.

Jesus, The Son of God, says:
“I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
John 3:3

Step 1

The first step is to admit that we have not met God’s standard of righteousness.

God is perfect and we are not. No matter how hard we try we cannot attain to the righteous he requires. This is called sin and it separates us from having a relationship with God.

Admitting that we have not met God’s standard causes us to realize we need to make our relationship right with God.

“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”
Rom 3:23

If you are ready move on to step two.

become a follower of Jesus

Step 2

The second step is to believe in the person called Jesus Christ.

Jesus says,
“I and my Father are one.”
John 10:30

“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6

Jesus’ claim is that he is the Son of God and the only way to be in the presence of God is through Him. For one to have a right relationship with God they must believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to heaven.

Step 3

The third step is to repent* of our sins.

Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.
Acts 3:19

Often this declaration is done through a prayer, possibly something like this: Jesus I admit that I have sinned against you and I believe that you are the Son of God and died on the cross to pay the penalty of my sin. I put my faith in you alone, please forgive me, come into my life and be my Lord.

*A turning from sin and towards the teachings of Jesus.
